A Bordered Runner Connecting Hallway and Staircase in an East Hampton Home
This East Hampton home has a second-floor landing that flows directly into the stairs, with wide-plank oak floors on either side. The homeowners wanted a runner that would soften the transition between hallway and staircase while keeping the herringbone weave crisp against the surrounding wood.
We selected a neutral herringbone runner with a solid taupe border, custom-fitted to the exact width of the landing and continued seamlessly down the stairs.

The Challenge
The runner needed to fit precisely within the landing's floor inlay while transitioning cleanly onto the stairs below, keeping the herringbone pattern and border aligned across two different surfaces and directions.
Our Solution
Our team measured the landing and staircase as one continuous run, planning the herringbone direction and border width so the pattern would read consistently from the upstairs hallway down through every tread.
Our installation included:
- Landing and staircase measurement
- Pattern and border selection
- Custom cutting and binding
- Precision installation across landing and stairs
- Final alignment and detailing check

The Finished Result
The finished runner ties the upstairs hallway and staircase together as one continuous design element, with the herringbone weave and clean border adding warmth without hiding the surrounding oak floors.
